About Hingoli — A Brief History

Hingoli is a small but very old town in the Marathwada region, sitting in the rolling country between the Penganga and the Kayadhu rivers. The settlement is mentioned in the Nizam-era records as an important market and post house on the road between Hyderabad and Akola, and it was carved out of Parbhani as a separate district only in 1999. The old town with its narrow lanes, the Hingoli Fort and the dargah of Auliya Hazrat Sayyad Shah Hosain locally called Sant Namdev Auliya make up the heritage core.

Just thirty kilometres from the district town stands Aundha Nagnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples of Lord Shiva. Sant Namdev, the great Marathi devotional poet of the thirteenth century, was born in Narsi village inside this district, and his small temple at Narsi continues to draw devotees from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Punjab.

The local economy depends on jowar, soybean, turmeric and cotton, and a few cooperative cotton ginning units around Basmath and Kalamnuri. The town is connected to Nanded and Akola by good roads.
