About Haridwar — A Brief History

Haridwar sits at the foot of the Shivalik hills in southern Uttarakhand, where the Ganga finally leaves the mountains and emerges onto the plains of north India. The town is one of the seven Mokshapuris of Hindu tradition and has been a major pilgrimage centre for over two thousand years. The town's name simply means 'the Gateway to Hari', or to Vishnu, and is sometimes spelt Hardwar (the gateway to Shiva) by Shaivites. Pilgrims have been bathing at the Hari Ki Pauri ghat here for centuries.

The most important place in Haridwar is the Hari Ki Pauri ghat in the heart of the city, where the daily Ganga Aarti at dusk draws thousands of pilgrims. Lord Vishnu is said to have left his footprint on a stone at Hari Ki Pauri, and the spot has been a sacred bathing place since at least the time of the Mahabharata. Haridwar is one of the four cities that hosts the Kumbh Mela every twelve years, and the 2010 Kumbh drew over forty million pilgrims to the city among the largest peaceful gatherings in human history. Mansa Devi temple on the Bilwa hill and Chandi Devi temple on the Neel hill, both reached by ropeway, complete the main pilgrim circuit.
