About Guna — A Brief History

Guna sits on the Malwa plateau in northern Madhya Pradesh, an old town that grew at the meeting of trade routes between Gwalior in the north and Bhopal in the south. The district takes its name from the headquarters town, sometimes spelt Goona in colonial records, which was a mid-rank principality under the Scindias of Gwalior in the nineteenth century and shows that period in its old residency, kothis and orderly cantonment streets. Soybean, wheat and chana from the Malwa farms are processed in mills along the railway line, and the Indian Air Force station adds a uniformed presence to the city.
