About Faridabad — A Brief History

Faridabad is the largest city of Haryana, sitting just south of Delhi on the eastern edge of the Aravalli ridge. The town was founded in 1607 by Shaikh Farid, the treasurer of the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who built a fort, a mosque and a sarai along the Delhi-to-Agra trunk road and gave the place its name. The original sarai of Sheikh Farid still stands in the old town near the railway station, although a busy market has grown up all around it.

Faridabad really took shape after independence. The new town was set up in 1949 to house and employ refugees from Pakistan, and a big industrial estate came up along NIT Faridabad. By the 1970s the city had grown into the largest manufacturing town between Delhi and Agra, and today it is part of the National Capital Region with its own metro line, modern townships and shopping malls. The Surajkund Mela, held every February in a 10th-century Tomar-era reservoir on the southern edge of the city, has become India's biggest annual handicrafts fair.

The local economy is heavily industrial auto parts, electronics, garments, tractors, refrigerators and tyres. Major plants like Escorts, JCB, Whirlpool and India Yamaha Motor are based here, and the Faridabad-NIT industrial cluster supplies the wider Delhi-NCR auto sector. The Delhi-Mathura highway, the Delhi metro Violet Line and the Faridabad-Noida-Greater Noida expressway keep the city well connected.
