About Durg — A Brief History

Durg sits in central Chattisgarh, on the western bank of the Shivnath river, and is the older half of the Durg-Bhilai twin city. The town is mentioned in early medieval records as Durga Pur, after the goddess Durga whose old shrine still stands in the heart of the bazaar. The settlement was part of the Kalachuri kingdom of Ratanpur, the Marathas of Nagpur and finally the British, who turned it into a tehsil headquarters under the Central Provinces administration. The town's older quarters around Patel Chowk, the Ganga Maiya temple and the Shivnath ghats have a quiet Marwari-merchant feel.

Durg is best known across India because of Bhilai, the planned steel-plant township just ten kilometres east. The Bhilai Steel Plant, set up in 1955 with Soviet collaboration as one of India's first integrated steel plants, transformed a small village into one of the largest industrial townships in the country. The plant produces over four million tonnes of steel a year, supplying the Indian Railways, the construction industry and exports across the world. Bhilai's planned grid plan, with broad avenues and sectors numbered like a Soviet city, still feels distinct from the older bazaars of Durg next door.

Beyond steel, the local economy includes paddy, pulses, dairy and the new IIT Bhilai campus. The Maitri Bagh zoo and rose garden, the Risali Lake and the Patharia Mahadev temple are other landmarks.
