About Dhule — A Brief History

Dhule is the largest town of Khandesh in the north-west of Maharashtra, sitting on the banks of the Panzara river. The town began as Laling and grew into an important market under the Faruqi sultans of Khandesh in the fifteenth century. After the Mughals took the region, then the Marathas and finally the British, Dhule became the headquarters of the West Khandesh district, and even today the town has the calm, planned look of a small colonial-era market headquarters.

The Rajwade Sanshodhan Mandal in Dhule itself holds one of the largest manuscript collections in Maharashtra and is known across the world to scholars of Marathi history.

Today the local economy mixes cotton, oilseeds and chillies with a growing solar-power and edible-oil cluster around Sakri. The town sits on NH-3, the old Mumbai-Agra highway, and on the Mumbai-Howrah trunk railway, so movement to Surat, Indore and Nashik stays easy.
