About Dharwad — A Brief History

Dharwad sits in northern Karnataka, on the Deccan plateau where the rich black-cotton soils begin to give way to the rocky country of the Konkan plateau. The town is the older of the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad Hubli is the busier commercial centre, Dharwad the educational and cultural one. Dharwad is famous across India as the cradle of Hindustani classical music in southern India. Two of the most important twentieth-century vocalists Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi both came from this small town, and their gharanas (Jaipur-Atrauli and Kirana respectively) trained generations of singers here. The annual Dharwad Utsav celebrates this musical heritage. The town is also famous for the Dharwad Pedha, a milky sweet that has earned a Geographical Indication tag and is sent as gift boxes to fans across India.

Beyond music and sweets, Dharwad is home to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Karnatak University and the Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad. Hubli, ten kilometres away, hosts the headquarters of the South Western Railway, busy textile and cotton-trade markets, and a growing aerospace cluster.
