About Daman — A Brief History

Daman sits on the western coast of India, just where the Daman Ganga river meets the Arabian Sea, and is one of the smallest district towns in the country. The settlement was held by the Portuguese for over four hundred years, from 1559 when they took it from the Bahadur Shah of Gujarat until 1961 when Indian forces liberated it as part of Operation Vijay. Together with the islands of Diu (further south on the Saurashtra coast), Daman formed the Portuguese district of Damao e Diu, and was governed from the Portuguese governor-general at Goa.

The town is split into Moti Daman (Big Daman) on the south bank of the river and Nani Daman (Small Daman) on the north. Moti Daman has the Portuguese-era Forte de São Jerónimo, built between 1559 and 1581, with its high stone walls, the Cathedral of Bom Jesus from 1603, the Church of Our Lady of the Sea, and the small lighthouse together making one of the best-preserved Portuguese fort complexes in India. Nani Daman has the smaller Forte de Saint Jerome and the busy Portuguese-era market.

Daman beach, the Devka and Jampore beaches, and the easy ferry hop to nearby Diu draw weekend tourists from Mumbai, Surat and Vapi. Beyond tourism, the local economy depends on fishing, the Daman tax-free shopping that grew up around the lower duty rates of the union territory, and a small chemical-industry belt.
