About Dadra & Nagar Haveli — A Brief History

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a small union territory wedged between Gujarat and Maharashtra, covering a strip of forested hills along the Daman Ganga river. The land was part of the small Maratha-era zamindari of Nagar Haveli before the Portuguese leased it from the Marathas of Pune in 1779 and then quietly took full control. They held the territory for almost two hundred years, and the small town of Silvassa today the capital was their administrative headquarters. Tribal Adivasi families of the Varli, Dhodia and Kokna communities have lived here continuously through all these changes and still make up most of the rural population.

The territory has a unique place in the freedom story of India. In July 1954, two years before the rest of Goa, Daman and Diu, a small group of Indian volunteers led by the United Front of Goans liberated Dadra and Nagar Haveli from the Portuguese in a brief armed action. For seven years the territory ran as the Free Dadra and Nagar Haveli administration, until it was formally merged with the Indian Union in 1961.

Silvassa today is a busy industrial town, with hundreds of small and medium pharma, plastics, paper and engineering plants drawn here by the lower union-territory tax rates. The Tribal Cultural Museum, the Vanganga Lake Garden, the Hirwa Van forest park and the small but striking Our Lady of Piety Church round out a quiet weekend tourism circuit.
