About Coimbatore — A Brief History

Coimbatore sits in western Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the Noyyal river at the foot of the Western Ghats. The town is mentioned in old Tamil Sangam-era poetry as Kongunadu, the kingdom of the Kongu Vellalars, and was an important Chola tax-collection centre from the tenth century onwards. The British took the town in 1799 after the fall of Tipu Sultan and made it the headquarters of a coffee-and-cardamom growing region.
