About Chennai — A Brief History

Chennai officially renamed from Madras in 1996 sits on the Coromandel Coast in northern Tamil Nadu and is the capital of the state. The settlement began in 1639 when the British East India Company bought a stretch of coast from the local Damerla Venkatadri Nayaka and built Fort St George, which still stands at the heart of the modern city. The Fort, the oldest British fort in India, was the launchpad of British power in southern India, and the original chapel of St Mary's inside it is the oldest Anglican church east of Suez.

The Madras of the British era grew into one of the four presidencies of India. The Marina Beach one of the longest urban beaches in the world runs for thirteen kilometres along the seafront. The Kapaleeshwarar temple in Mylapore, built in the seventh century, is the spiritual heart of the city, while the Santhome Basilica is built over what is believed to be the tomb of St Thomas the Apostle. The Madras High Court, the Senate House of the University of Madras and the Chepauk Palace are landmark buildings.
