About Bundi — A Brief History

Bundi is a small but unusually beautiful old town tucked into the rocky Aravalli hills near the south-east corner of north India. The settlement was founded in the early fourteenth century by Rao Deva Hada, who turned a small hilltop into the powerful Hada Chauhan kingdom of Bundi, one of the longest-surviving Rajput courts in the region. For more than five hundred years the Hadas of Bundi controlled a wide stretch of the Hadoti country, and many of the buildings of that period the Taragarh Fort high above the town, the rambling Garh Palace below it, and the famous Chitrashala with its Bundi-school murals are still standing.

Bundi is most famous for its step-wells. The Raniji ki Baori, with its 46-metre-deep galleries of carved sandstone arches, is one of the largest in India, and the Nagar Sagar Kund, the Sukh Mahal step-well and the smaller wells in the bazaar lanes give the town the unofficial nickname of city of step-wells. The British writer Rudyard Kipling stayed at the Sukh Mahal in 1888 and wrote part of Kim while looking out at Bundi, and the painted royal cenotaphs at Khethri are some of the most colourful in north-west India.

Beyond tourism, the local economy depends on wheat, mustard, soybean and a small stone-quarry belt. The town is connected by NH-52 and the Kota–Chittor railway.
