About Bilaspur(cgh) — A Brief History

Bilaspur sits in northern Chattisgarh, in the rolling country where the Maikal range slopes down towards the Mahanadi plain. The town is mentioned in old records as Vilas Pattan, named after a Kewat woman called Bilasa Bai who lived here in the seventeenth century. The settlement was part of the Kalachuri kingdom of Ratanpur, then the Marathas of Nagpur, and finally the British, who turned it into the headquarters of their Bilaspur district in 1862. The old Achanakmar Tiger Reserve in the northern hills is the largest forest in the state.

Bilaspur is widely known across India as the rice bowl of Chattisgarh because of the rich paddy plain that surrounds it. The Bilaspur rice mandi is one of the largest in central India, and the famous Bilaspur Doobraj scented rice has a Geographical Indication tag. Beyond rice, the district produces wheat, pulses and the unusual Tikhur arrowroot. The South Eastern Coalfields Limited has its headquarters in Bilaspur, and the long line of coal mines around Korba (just to the east) feeds power plants across northern India.

The town hosts the Bilaspur High Court, the seat of the Chattisgarh High Court since the state was created in 2000, and the South East Central Railway zonal headquarters.
