About Bhilwara — A Brief History

Bhilwara sits in southern Rajasthan, on the Mansi Wakal river in the rocky country where the Mewar plateau slowly drops down towards the Banas valley. The town gets its name from the Bhil tribal communities who lived in the surrounding hills for centuries before the Sisodia rulers of Mewar incorporated the area into their kingdom in the medieval period. Today Bhilwara accounts for nearly half of India's polyester suiting production, and the city is sometimes called the Manchester of Rajasthan.

Beyond textiles, the district has the Menal waterfalls, the Mandalgarh Fort (one of the three strongest in Mewar history), the Tilaswan Mahadev temple at Mandalgarh, and the Kankroli Maa Charbhuja temple at Hamirgarh. The local economy also includes zinc and lead mining at Rampura-Agucha, wheat and oilseeds.
