About Bhandara — A Brief History

Bhandara is a town in the eastern part of Vidarbha, set on the banks of the Wainganga river. The name comes from the local words for a brass workshop, because the town has been famous for its brass-ware for several hundred years, and even today the streets near the old market are full of small workshops where craftsmen still beat copper and brass into utensils, lamps and temple bells. Many parts of India still call brass thaalis 'Bhandara plates' because of this old reputation.

The district has many small forts and old temples scattered across its forests, including the Ambagad fort built in the late seventeenth century by the Bhonsles of Nagpur, and the small temple at Pauni which is famous for its annual fair. The city is well linked to Nagpur, just an hour's drive away, by NH-53 and the Mumbai–Howrah rail line.
