About Bathinda — A Brief History

Bathinda also spelled Bhatinda in older records sits in southern Punjab, in the dry plain that runs into Rajasthan and Haryana. The town is one of the oldest in the Punjab plain, and is mentioned in early medieval inscriptions as Tabarhindh. The huge mud-and-brick Qila Mubarak fort at the centre of the city, said to have been built around 90 CE on the orders of Raja Dab, is one of the oldest surviving forts in India, and is famously linked with Razia Sultan, the only female Sultan of Delhi, who was held prisoner here in 1240 after she was overthrown.

Bathinda's location at the meeting of railway lines made it one of the largest railway junctions in north India in the colonial period, and the town still serves as a major railway centre. The Bhatinda Cantonment is one of the largest in the country, and the Indian Air Force station here is home to several front-line squadrons.

Today Bathinda is famous as the energy city of Punjab, with the Guru Hargobind thermal power plant, the Talwandi Sabo thermal power plant, the HMEL Bathinda oil refinery (a joint venture between HPCL and Mittal Energy), and a major fertiliser plant. The local economy also includes cotton, paddy, basmati rice and a growing AIIMS hospital. The Damdama Sahib gurudwara at Talwandi Sabo, one of the five Takhts of Sikhism, is also in this district.
