About Barmer — A Brief History

Barmer sits in the far western tip of Rajasthan, deep in the Thar desert just east of the Pakistan border. The town was founded in the thirteenth century by Bahad Rao, a Parihar Rajput chieftain, and was named Bahadmer (the city of Bahad). The Parihars built the small but striking Juna Barmer Fort, and the area later passed through Rathore, Mughal and finally Jodhpur-state hands.

Barmer is best known across India for two very different things. The first is its handicrafts the Ajrakh and applique-work fabrics, the carved wooden furniture, the embroidered Barmeri Patti shawls and the silver tribal jewellery all of which travel from the Barmer cluster to designer stores in Mumbai and Delhi. The second is the Barmer International Folk Festival held every March in the desert, with Manganiyar musicians, kathputli puppeteers and Kalbelia dancers from across western Rajasthan, drawing visitors from across India.

Modern Barmer has been transformed by the Cairn Energy oilfield discoveries of the 2000s, which have made the district one of India's biggest onshore crude-oil producers, with the giant Mangala oilfield and the new HPCL refinery coming up at Pachpadra. Beyond oil, the local economy still depends on bajra, cumin, milk and the traditional craft trade. The Jodhpur–Munabao railway and the Barmer-Jodhpur road keep the town connected.
