About Aurangabad — A Brief History

Aurangabad has a long history that goes back to the early 1600s, when the Ahmednagar minister Malik Ambar founded a small new town here called Khadki and turned it into the capital of his short Nizam Shahi resistance against the Mughals. His son renamed it Fatehnagar, and when Aurangzeb made the town his Deccan headquarters and finally settled here at the end of his life, it took the name Aurangabad. After 2022 the state officially renamed the city Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

The city is famous for its many historic sites. The Bibi ka Maqbara, built by Aurangzeb's son for his mother and often called the Taj of the Deccan, sits on the northern edge. Just outside the city, Daulatabad Fort rises on a single rock, with its winding tunnel approach and bat-filled passages. The world-famous Ajanta and Ellora caves, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are within an easy day's drive and continue to draw visitors from across the world. The Panchakki water mill built in the seventeenth century still works, run by the same medieval underground channel.

Today the city is a manufacturing centre for auto parts, beer and pharmaceuticals, with the MIDC at Waluj and Shendra running large plants. The Aurangabad airport, the Mumbai–Howrah railway and the Nagpur–Mumbai Samruddhi expressway all pass through, while Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University pulls in students from across the state.
