About Ananthapur — A Brief History

Anantapur sometimes spelt Ananthapur sits in the dry south-western corner of Andhra Pradesh, in the rocky country where the state runs into Karnataka. The town was founded in the eighteenth century by Hande Anantappa Naidu, a chieftain under the Vijayanagara empire, who built the small fort of Anantasagaram and the temple of Anantha Padmanabha that still anchors the older quarter. The settlement was part of the Vijayanagara empire's southern province, then the Qutb Shahis of Golconda, the Asaf Jahi Nizams and finally the British, who took it from Tipu Sultan after the fall of Seringapatam in 1799.

Anantapur is in the heart of the Rayalaseema region, one of the driest belts in southern India, with rainfall often below 500mm a year. The Lepakshi temple about a hundred kilometres away, with its hanging pillar and giant monolithic Nandi, is one of the most-visited Vijayanagara-era temples in the country. Penukonda Fort, sixty kilometres from the district town, was an important Vijayanagara stronghold and a temporary capital after the fall of Hampi in 1565. The famous yarn-spun Penukonda silk reaches the markets in Anantapur.

The local economy depends on groundnut, sericulture (the Reliance Anantapur silk-weaving complex is one of the largest in the country), and a growing wind-power belt that uses the consistent dry winds. Kia Motors recently set up a major car plant near Penukonda, transforming the district economy.
