About Amritsar — A Brief History

Amritsar is one of the most important cities in northern India and the spiritual capital of Sikhism. The town was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, who chose the site for a holy tank Amrit Sarovar, the pool of nectar from which the city takes its name. His son Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, built the Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) in the centre of this tank in 1604 and installed the Adi Granth, the first version of the Sikh holy book, here. The temple has been at the heart of Sikh religious life ever since.

Amritsar grew quickly under the Sikh Misls and especially under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who covered the upper part of the Harmandir Sahib in gold leaf in the early nineteenth century, giving it the name by which the world now knows it. The British took Amritsar in 1849 after the Anglo-Sikh wars. The 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, where British troops fired on a peaceful gathering and killed hundreds of unarmed people, became a turning point in the Indian freedom movement. The Jallianwala Bagh memorial just next to the Golden Temple still preserves the bullet-marked walls and the well into which people jumped to escape the firing.

Amritsar is also famous for the Wagah-Attari border ceremony with Pakistan, Punjabi cuisine the dhabas of the city are among the most famous in India and the woollen-shawl and papad-trade.
