About Amravati — A Brief History

Amravati lies in the heart of Vidarbha, a town that takes its name from the Goddess Amba whose shrine in the old quarter is one of the oldest in the region. Local stories trace the town all the way back to the time of the Yadavas of Devagiri, and the Bhonsle rulers of Nagpur later made it part of the Berar Subah under their hold. The British took it in the 1850s, set up the cotton-trading agency that turned the town into a regional hub, and the same role continues today.

Amravati is best known across central India for the Ambadevi temple and the smaller Ekvira temple right next to it, both very old and busy through the year. Today Amravati runs on cotton, oranges, soybean and a growing food-processing belt around MIDC. With the Mumbai-Howrah trunk railway, the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi expressway and good road links to Nagpur, the district stays busy.
