About Allahabad — A Brief History

Allahabad officially renamed Prayagraj in 2018 sits at the meeting of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the legendary unseen Saraswati in eastern UP. The triveni sangam, the spot where the three rivers join, has been a sacred place for Hindus for at least three thousand years, and the Maha Kumbh Mela held here every twelve years draws tens of millions of pilgrims to the riverside. The town's older name was Prayag the place of sacrifice and it was renamed Illahabad by Akbar in 1583 when he built the great riverside Allahabad Fort to control the Ganga-Yamuna trade.

Allahabad is closely tied to modern Indian politics. Anand Bhavan, the family home of the Nehrus, is here and is now a museum. Several prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, V.P. Singh, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Chandra Shekhar were born in or near the city. The University of Allahabad, founded in 1887, was once called the Oxford of the East, and produced generations of national leaders, civil servants and writers.
