About Ajmer — A Brief History

Ajmer sits at the foot of the Aravalli ranges in eastern Rajasthan, around the small Anasagar lake that the Chauhan king Anaji built in the twelfth century. The town was the capital of the Chauhan kingdom, the most powerful of the Rajput courts in northern India until Prithviraj Chauhan was defeated by Muhammad Ghori at the second battle of Tarain in 1192. The famous Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra mosque in the heart of the city, built quickly in two-and-a-half days from temple stones in 1199, marks the start of Sultanate rule here.

Ajmer's most important place today is the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the great Sufi saint of the late twelfth century who came to India from Persia and made Ajmer his home. The Garib Nawaz dargah, as it is widely known, draws tens of millions of pilgrims of all faiths every year, and the annual Urs festival in March or April brings huge crowds from across India and abroad. The Mughal emperors from Akbar onwards made the Ajmer pilgrimage a personal habit, and the dargah complex itself was built up over centuries by their patronage.

Beyond the dargah, Ajmer has the Mayo College, the Taragarh fort high above the city, the Pushkar lake and Brahma temple just outside the district, and the Akbari Fort and Museum. The local economy mixes pilgrim tourism, education, marble (the surrounding Kishangarh marble belt is famous), and small engineering.
