About Ahmed Nagar — A Brief History

Ahmednagar got its start in 1494, when Ahmad Nizam Shah I founded a new town beside the Sina river and made it his capital. The name simply means Ahmad's city, and for over a hundred years the Nizam Shahi sultans ruled large parts of the western Deccan from here. They built the strong Bhuikot Fort, the Damdi Mosque and the lovely Bagh Rauza tombs that you can still walk around today. The fort later passed to the Mughals, and the emperor Aurangzeb died inside it in 1707. Decades later, the British used the same fort to keep Jawaharlal Nehru and other leaders during the Quit India movement, and Nehru wrote much of his book Discovery of India during that stay.

Most people in Maharashtra know Ahmednagar today as the home of India's cooperative sugar movement. The first cooperative sugar factory in the country was set up at Pravaranagar in the 1950s, and the model spread across the state from there. The district has also produced national leaders like Yashwantrao Chavan, the first chief minister of modern Maharashtra. The Shani Shingnapur shrine in Sonai, famous because the village houses traditionally have no doors, brings lakhs of visitors a year, especially on Saturdays for Shani worship.

The local economy still runs on sugar, milk, onions and a growing engineering belt around the MIDC area. The Indian Army's Armoured Corps Centre and School, which has trained tank officers since 1948, sits in the cantonment and gives the city a strong service feel. The district is well linked to Pune and Nashik by road and rail.
