About Agra — A Brief History

Agra sits on the southern bank of the Yamuna in western UP, and is one of the most visited cities in India because of the Taj Mahal. The town shows up in Mahabharata-era stories under the name Agraban, the forest of Agra, and Sultan Sikandar Lodi made it the capital of the Delhi Sultanate in 1504. The Mughal emperor Akbar moved his court here in 1556 and built the great red sandstone Agra Fort that still stands by the river. His grandson Shah Jahan added the Taj Mahal between 1632 and 1653 in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal today a UNESCO site that draws over six million visitors a year.

Beyond the Taj, Agra has plenty of other Mughal-era buildings to see. Akbar's tomb at Sikandra, the Itimad-ud-Daulah (often called the Baby Taj), the Jama Masjid and the Mehtab Bagh garden across the river are all part of the standard visitor circuit. Fatehpur Sikri, the planned red sandstone city that Akbar built and abandoned within twenty years, is just an hour away and is also a UNESCO site.

The city is well linked by the Yamuna Expressway to Delhi and the new Bundelkhand Expressway.
